Once Upon A Time…
…founder Shane Hastings
was a store manager of the Christiania, Delaware, Circuit City.
Business was good, and Shane was the respected leader of a loyal and devoted team.
Then, one day, an older woman with an uncommon knowledge of technology
breezed into Shane’s store.
You see, Shane had just started selling high definition TVs,
a marvelous new technology that baffled everyone but this particular old woman.
She went right to the TV section and purchased the very first HDTV in Christiania.
She paid and left, but soon returned.
Again.
And again.
And again…
Every week, like clockwork, the old woman came into Shane’s store,
and brought with her a scrumptious plate of homemade cookies.
“Pardon me, ma’am,” Shane asked on one occasion, between bites of tasty cookie,
“but who are you and why do you bring us cookies?”
“My name is Ms. Walker,” she replied, with a twinkle in her eye.
And so it went for some time.
Ms. Walker and her cookies came in every week,
until one cloudy afternoon, Shane received a call.
It seemed Ms. Walker’s HDTV had gone crazy, and not even she was able to fix it.
Shane dispatched his service crew and went about his day.
One hour passed, then two.
Three hours, four…
Shane scratched his head and pondered. Where on earth was his crew?
He called them up and asked them, and the lead tech said:
“Well boss, you see, she lives a state away.
We had to drive two hours and a half, and we’re just now headed back.”
Shane couldn’t believe this could be true! Surely his crew took a leisure spin.
Why on earth would anyone come so far—and every week at that!
So the next time old Ms. Walker and her cookies came, Shane asked her why she had. “Why come so far when a store like ours lies 15 minutes from your home?”
“Because,” Ms. Walker smiled and said,
“you make me feel like I am part of something.”
Ever since that day, Shane has made it his goal to make every customer a Ms. Walker.
And so began the guiding philosophy of P3:
to make every customer feel that
“this is our business, and we are building it together.”
P3 is an expansion of R&S, a Delaware pond company started in 1990 by founder Shane Hastings. R&S began when Shane installed a pond on his personal property to attract birds. When the pond leaked, Shane sought the advice of a local pond store owner, who fixed the pond and taught Shane the basics of pond maintenance and installation. Within 3 years, Shane and his lifelong friend Ran Wemple were installing ponds and water features in four states. Early clients included Leon’s Garden World, Waterloo Gardens, Longwood Gardens and Richardson’s Garden Center.
R&S moved its operations to Colorado in 2004. Within two years, Ran and Shane established more than 100 ongoing customer relationships. After several years of successful growth, they decided growing demand would support an expanded business model. Plans are underway to open an all inclusive showroom where customers can browse the large selection, choose individual catered service and relax to the sounds of cascading waterfalls all around them. Shane's wife Recole alond with family members Melina Sommers and David Holley do all the design and layouts of the ponds. Shane jokes they are more creative and Ran and him are just the muscle:)
